They announced an abrupt pop turnaround *sound of breaking glass, a baby's crying*.
So what? With all the Gagas that monopolise market shares, you need to play ball if you want to stay in the game.
'A Joyful Noise'... The cult of nostalgia is popular nowadays. The new album of Gossip is clearly inspired from the 80's. Therefore they put their guitars and saturated riffs in the basement to welcome keyboards and electronic beats. Question: how is the band managing the after 'Music For Men' that contained the infamous 'Heavy Cross'?

NOT THAT BAD.
They aimed at launching a pop record, an objective that they completely reached out without falling in the tempting path of cliché. They explore all the genre, selecting relevant bits to associate with their vibrant signature: Beth Ditto is a true jewel.
Once the tendency set up from the second track 'Perfect World', the album is a flow of surprises that doesn't seem to stop; it actually grows bigger, stronger and smarter. It is never the same thing but it is coherent; 'Get A Job' is catchy, 'Move In The Right Direction' litteraly makes you dream whereas 'Casualties Of War' puts you on hold for four lovely minutes.

PLEASE LISTEN TO
#7 - Get Lost. I jumped off of my chair. Seriously.
#8 - Involved. Beth Ditto's voice is... epic!
#9 - Horns. Hell yeah.
#11 - Love In A Foreign Place. A perfect way to close the deal.
PLEASE AVOID
#1 - Melody Emergency. If you want to do pop, at least do it on every track...
IN BRIEF
Good job on the whole but there's a major lack of Gossip's punch and enthusiasm... Maybe the theme couldn't allow them to express them correctly but still... Was it the price to pay for successful challenge though? To be honest If I had to choose between the two albums I'll go for the first. Not because the first one is better; here it is a matter of taste as 'Music For Men' and 'A Joyful Noise' are singularly different. Personally, I think sometimes you need to go deeper on what you're good at instead of digging way to far.
